Sweet oranges appear to have first been used in for the citrus fragrance of their peel – early Chinese transcripts suggest it was then common to hold orange peel so that the warmth released the citrus scent. During the 1st century, the orange spread beyond China to Japan and India and the classical world. The Arabs spread it as far as Spain. The sweet orange appeared in Italy in the 15th century, later than other citrus varieties brought back by soldiers returning from Palestine. Columbus himself took seeds of various citrus varieties to the Caribbean, where the fruits flourished. Florida, with a similar climate in the adjacent mainland was similarly welcoming to the orange, a distant beginning leading to the now mammoth citrus industry.
