Tea Tales

Depictions of citrus trees appear in the classical Roman mosaics of North Africa but the lemon was then more a curiosity and decoration. At the end of the twelfth century, Ibn Jami, personal physician to the great leader Saladin, wrote a treatise on the lemon after which it is mentioned with greater frequency in the Mediterranean. However, it is believed that the first lemons were originally cultivated in the hot, semi-arid Deccan Plateau in Central India. Taking a peek into the crowded history of cuisine, the happy marriage between lemon and fish probably took place in Italy, where in 1549 Crisoforo di Messiburgo put forward a recipe for marinated brill with lemon slices. Turning to things less fishy, we find the marriage of tea and the lemon no less auspicious and this union continues even today with as much, ahem, zest as ever.
